Gallery - Thiepval Memorial to the Missing

The Thiepval Memorial is built on the site of Thiepval Spur, a German strongpoint which inflicted huge losses both on 1st July and for many weeks afterwards. The monument's sixteen huge pillars are engraved with the names of over 73,000 men killed on the Somme in 1916/17 and who have no known graves. On the rare occasions when a body is found and identified it will be properly buried in one of the military cemetries which are abundant in the area and the soldier's name will be removed from the Memorial.
