Gallery - Autumn on the Somme

One of the many woods of the Somme region being consolidated after capture by the Allies. These natural fortresses were bitterly fought over, attack and counter attack being met by hails of bullets and artillery fire, resulting in horrendous carnage on both sides. By autumn, 1916 they resembled woods in name only.
