- Lewis Brooking of the Royal Berkshire Regt.

This
photo has the following written on the reverse:
March
1917
WIVENHOE
LEWIS & PALS NONE CAME BACK FROM THE SOMME.
EPPERNIA WOOD
NR. SENUS, AGINCOURT
Lewis
Alfred Brooking is last on the right. He served with the Royal Berkshire
Regiment having joined up in 1914, aged 16. Lewis is though to have
been promoted to Corporal and although being wounded by shrapnel
returned to the front and survived the war. One of the others in
the photo may well be his good friend Nobby Clarke (the Nobby may
have been a nickname). All of these men (except Lewis) were killed
during the war. Their Battalion is not known for sure, but given
Lewis's joining up in 1914 and the fact that they fought on the
Somme it is probable that they were in one or the Kitchener Battalions,
the 5th, 6th or 8th Royal Berks.
Lewis's
grandson would welcome any information anybody may have about the
men in the photo. If you can help please email
and the information will be passed on to him.
